THE EARLY YEARS FOUNDATION STAGE (EYFS): NURSERY AND RECEPTION (KINDERGARTEN)

At Halstead we know that each child is unique and that girls learn most effectively when they feel valued, happy and secure. These early years of education are so important providing the basis for all future learning, establishing positive attitudes towards school, good self-esteem and appropriate behaviour. Our purpose built and generously-resourced Early Years indoor and outdoor classrooms create a stimulating and engaging learning environment where each girl can thrive, develop and learn at the right pace for her - smiles and enthusiasm abound!
An appropriate balance of self-initiated play and teacher-led activities gives enjoyable first-hand learning experiences and structured play activities which support the Early Learning Goals.In the Nursery the pupil:staff ratio is 1:4 for our two year old girls and 1:8 for older Nursery girls. The maximum number of girls in each of the two Reception classes is 16, each class having its own well-qualified teacher supported by a Teaching Assistant. The girls benefit from specialist teaching in PE, Drama, Music and Dance.
We have half-termly topics, providing opportunities for learning in the seven areas of the curriculum.

A phonics programme is taught; a new sounds is learned each week in Nursery; in Reception phonics and reading are practised every day. The phonemes are sent home every week, along with 'tricky words', so that parents can enjoy supporting their daughter in learning these key skills.
